Hemel Storm are pleased to announce the signing of 6’ 8’ forward Matt Ellis, who will take up one of the two available import spots for the 2024/25 season.
Ellis started his professional career at Canada’s University of Victoria in 2019/20, becoming Canada West Champion in his second year alongside fellow Storm recruit Trent Monkman. In that same campaign of 2020/21, Ellis was one of only two men in the squad to start every single game and averaged 13 points per game while leading his side in blocks.
After graduating from Victoria, Ellis headed to Argentina where he spent a year at Club Atlético Montmartre competing in the La Liga Federal.
Last season saw him turn his attention to Europe, suiting up for Portuguese Proliga outfit Galitos-Barreiro where he averaged 16.4 points across 18 games, featuring a high of 31 against Queluz.
His performances won wide acclaim throughout the league and he was duly rewarded with several awards including Player of the Year, Forward of the Year and Import of the Year, as well as earning a spot in the First Team All-Star and All Import Teams.
On the challenge that awaits him, Ellis said “I’m happy to be adding to the winning legacy with Hemel Storm this season.”
“Being able to add my talent to a mix of guys that have already proved to be an elite team is a gift and I am looking forward to what we can accomplish as a unit this year.”
One of many talented players choosing the University of Hertfordshire to continue his studies, Ellis will also play BUCS basketball where he will help the team in their Premier Division campaign.
Adding height, athleticism and great power at both ends of the court, Ellis is sure to be another superb addition in Storm’s bid to continue their recent reign at the peak of NBL basketball.
