Storm fans will have noticed that the NBL Division One league season started this past weekend. Our scheduled opening game was postponed by Bradford whose team were in isolation.
The men's NBL Division One is deemed an elite sport. This means we will continue to be allowed to play under specific Covid guidelines issued by Basketball England (BE); this includes not being allowed spectators. The loss of our significant spectator income has had a gigantic impact on our operations so far this season.
Whilst Storm were determined to support our participation in the excellent L Lynch Trophy group stages, Storm have made it clear to BE that we face a very uncertain period unless our loss of spectator income is fully compensated.
At the present time BE are in discussions with government in respect to a support package for elite basketball, however the specific outcome of these negotiations remains uncertain.
Until government funding materialises, Storm are supporting the cost operations to allow training to continue and where possible participate in the league as frequently as finances allow.
However, due to these financial constraints we are sadly forced to postpone this coming weekend's home game against BA London Lions. We will comment further in the near future as and when we know more.
