Former BBL star Nelson-Henry returns to basketball with Hemel Storm!

Hemel Storm are delighted to announce the signing of ex-Leicester Riders captain Darien Nelson-Henry, in an ambitious strengthening of the roster boosting their hopes of silverware in the second half of the campaign.

Nelson-Henry was last seen in the BBL in the 2022-23 season, where he captained the Riders to a playoff and cup final, having claimed the treble the previous season, also under his reign. He spent three-and-a-half years at the BBL outfit, picking up 4 trophies and twice being named in the BBL Team of the Year in his spell at the side.

Nelson-Henry joins the Storm with an impressive track record behind him, having also played professional basketball in Austria and Poland after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, where he appeared in the NCAA for Pennsylvania Quakers, and the veteran will look to add to his glittering resume with more success in his new challenge in Hemel.

As a consistent BBL performer, averaging around 12 points and 6 rebounds in his top-flight career, Darien possesses the quality to really add to this Storm side, and at 6’ 11” will hope to form a productive relationship with fellow big men Hakeem Sylla and Brayden Inger, in a move that will provide defensive challenges and conundrums to opposition sides.

Darien commented “I am very excited to join Hemel; both because of their successful track record in recent years, and because of the atmosphere they have cultivated. It seems like a great group of guys, along with a solid level of basketball. I am looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish this season.”

The 29-year-old will also add a wealth of experience to a young Storm side, and will be a key presence in the locker room, providing a steady head required as Storm look to push on and achieve some success as the season moves into its crucial stages.

Darien and his new teammates are in action this Saturday at the StormDome as they face Team Newcastle University at 7pm. Make sure you’re there to cheer on the side and meet your new man, with tickets available at
